Advanced Actions Tutorials in Adobe Captivate

Ever look at someone else's course and wonder how they did it? It's probably because they used advanced actions!

Using advanced actions in adobe captivate can make your eLearning courses more engaging and interesting to the participants. With advanced actions you can create a series of multiple events and you can create multiple complex events with one or more conditions.

Advanced actions can be used with system and user variables, they can be used in association with text entry boxes, mathematical expressions, quizzing, and widgets. Variables are place holders for the computers memory that can recall certain information when you need it. There are many system variables that come with captivate and you can create your own user-defined variables.

Adobe captivate is an amazing robust software and I learn something new every day! Additionally, there is typically more than one way to do something and every developer has their own workflow style. So although I explain the step-by-step procedures in the below manuals using my workflow, my way is not the only way. Advanced actions can provide endless possibilities, but they take time and practice to learn and understand. As one of my trainee's said to me a short while ago:

"Anita, I finally got it this time around, advanced actions are going to revolutionize my projects from mundane to interactivity.  Thanks for all your help".

I recently presented a webinar on how to do the advanced actions that are represented in the examples below. The link to the recorded version  The link provides downloads of the manuals.

DESCRIPTION: Ever wondered how to allow users to click on any button, in any order, before they can advance in the course? The webinar will demonstrate simple step-by-step instructions on how to create and apply Conditional Advanced Actions in Adobe Captivate.

    2. Hello Anita. Thank you for your incredibel captivate training seminars. I need your help. In my captivate project, I want to hide the Next button on the slide and have it appear only after the text to speech for that slide has finished. Can you help me with the advanced actions on this? Thank you!

    3. You're welcome, so glad you like them. Sounds like you don't need Advanced actions to do what you want, you could use the timeline to bring in the button when the audio is complete.

    4. Hi Anita -- I downloaded all three pdfs and worked through most of them. I am learning a lot! I am stuck in part three where you asked the learner to add particular files to the project (ie - Reimb_Panel.png). Did you want us to use these exact files? If so, where do I find them? In seems the directions work only with these files "Place a transparent text caption next to each of the dollar signs in the Reimb_Panel.png graphic. Put the corresponding variable in each of the three text captions. Format the text captions as needed"

    5. Hi Ryan, glad you are getting something out of the advanced action manuals. No, you don't need to use the same graphics. You need to create the variables, and then create a text caption and add the variable within the text caption. Feel free to email me at anitahorsley@gmail.com for further questions/details. Thanks, Anita

  2. Hi Anita - Thanks so much for your blog. I learn so much from it. I was watching the webinar on Adobe Connect and was anxiously waiting for you to show how you made the clear action for the button, but sadly you had to answer questions and ran out of time before showing how. I cannot find it either in the pdfs. Ay advice? I have created the button and put everything on the slide. I just need to figure out how to use the button to go back to the original images. I think I know how to create the action with show/hide but do I have to create a separate button for each group? I guess that is where I am confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Hello Anita! I really enjoyed your tutorial on Standard Advanced Actions. At the end of it you mentioned that you have another one that shows how to use a Conditional Advanced Action to show a next button when all of the selections on the screen have been made. I have not been able to locate this training. Can you send me the link?
